Christmas Gifts for Grandpa: 9 Ideas from Bavarian Spices to Photo Books

For a grandpa who already has everything, we looked for gifts for long winter evenings and for outdoors. Our first suggestion is spices for Bavarian cooking. The other eight ideas range from photo books on space travel and classic cars through raclette accessories, barbecue spices and a Swiss pine cushion to a fire bowl, a torch and a multitool. Every idea lists several products with today's price and a note on what to check before buying.

Product photo: Bavarian Spice Gift Sets

If you give only one thing

Bavarian Spice Gift Sets

est. €22 – €61

Gewürzmühle Rosenheim blends spices for Bavarian cooking, for hot dishes such as fried potatoes or roast chicken and for a cold Bavarian supper. Depending on the set, the gift box adds more spices, wooden boards or a cookbook.

What to look for: Dried spices may contain small amounts of germs. The German Federal Centre for Nutrition (BZfE, 2026) therefore advises older people to heat dishes seasoned with them to over 70 degrees for at least two minutes. Obazda cheese spread and buttered bread are never heated, so a set with blends for hot dishes suits your grandpa. The product description lists the blends in each set. Ground spices are best used up within a year of opening. [1]

How we chose

Ideas, not single products

Each idea groups similar products, often from several brands. We tell you why the idea fits. You pick the product by budget and taste.

Only with a real choice

We add an idea only when at least three products fit it. We have not tested the products.

To leaf through on long evenings

Photo books on space travel and on cars, motorcycles and watches. Check which language an edition is in before you order.

Product photo: Photo Books on Space Exploration

If he remembers the moon landing

Photo Books on Space Exploration

est. €24 – €100

On 20 July 1969 the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon, NASA records. Anyone born before 1962 was at least seven then. The choice includes TASCHEN photo books with pictures from the NASA archive, for example of the moon landing, of Mars or from the Hubble telescope.

What to look for: If he remembers the night of the moon landing, pick a book on Apollo 11. If space itself interests him more, the books on Mars or the Hubble telescope suit him. [3]

Product photo: Books on Cars, Motorcycles and Watches

If he loves classic cars

Books on Cars, Motorcycles and Watches

est. €18 – €100

The TASCHEN books present classic cars, motorcycles and wristwatches in pictures, from early sports cars to Porsche racing cars. Each book has its own subject.

What to look for: Check the language of the edition, as (EN) in the title stands for English. If your grandpa reads no English, look in the product description for a German or multilingual edition. TASCHEN describes its 45th Edition series as more compact, lower-priced new editions of well-known titles. [4]

For cosy evenings

Raclette with the family, spices for the grill and the roast, and a cushion smelling of Swiss pine.

Product photo: Wooden Raclette Sets

If the family has raclette at his place

Wooden Raclette Sets

est. €11 – €28

A wooden set adds to the raclette grill he already owns. The hot pans rest on the boards at the table, and everyone scrapes out their cheese with the spatulas.

What to look for: For barbecues and fondue the Verbraucherzentrale NRW advises separate forks and plates for raw and cooked meat, and the inside of the meat should reach at least 70 degrees for two minutes. If meat goes into the raclette pans, we think the same applies. He washes the wooden boards by hand, as the dishwasher makes them swell. 25

Product photo: Barbecue Spice Gift Sets

If he enjoys a barbecue

Barbecue Spice Gift Sets

est. €24 – €70

Rubs are spice blends rubbed onto meat or vegetables before grilling or roasting. The sets hold rubs, barbecue salt or pepper, and some of them suit an oven roast too.

What to look for: The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) cites the rule of thumb golden, not charred. Food should be heated no more and no longer than needed. Fat dripping into the embers creates more harmful PAHs. A rub goes on the meat before grilling and is heated with it, in line with the German Federal Centre for Nutrition's advice to older people on dried spices. 16

Product photo: Swiss Pine Cushions

If he likes the smell of wood

Swiss Pine Cushions

est. €20 – €150

The cushions are filled with Swiss stone pine shavings and smell distinctly of wood. There are small cushions for the sofa, large sleeping pillows and a pine diffuser.

What to look for: There is no proof Swiss pine helps you sleep better, the Austrian consumer organisation VKI wrote in 2019 about pine beds. Natural fragrances are generally no less likely to trigger allergies than synthetic ones, according to the German Environment Agency (2016). If your grandpa reacts to scents, pick another idea. 78

For outdoors

A fire bowl for the garden, a torch for dark paths and a multitool for small repairs on the go.

Product photo: Garden Fire Bowls

If he has a garden with room for one

Garden Fire Bowls

est. €43 – €90

A fire bowl stands in the garden or on the patio and keeps the fire off the ground. The choice includes open bowls, models with a spark guard or lid and steel fire globes with cut-out motifs.

What to look for: The German Environment Agency advises avoiding open fires for environmental and health reasons, and in tightly built-up residential areas altogether. If your grandpa makes one anyway, he burns only dry, untreated wood and first checks his municipality's rules. In 2025 the German Firefighters Association and the vfdb named a distance of at least 5 m from buildings made of flammable materials and 100 m from easily flammable materials. In strong wind the bowl stays unlit, and the fire is never left unattended. 910

Product photo: Rechargeable Torches

If he still goes out in the evening

Rechargeable Torches

est. €24 – €114

Rechargeable torches charge over USB, some in a charging case, so he needs no batteries. The choice includes small keyring lights, clip lights for a jacket and brighter handheld torches.

What to look for: The German safety initiative Aktion Das sichere Haus advises fixed lighting on outdoor paths, for example with motion sensors, so trip hazards are visible. Where there is no such light, a torch helps. Nobody should look into the beam of an LED torch from close up, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health wrote in 2021. 1112

Product photo: Compact Multitools

If he repairs everything himself

Compact Multitools

est. €20 – €72

Depending on the model, a multitool combines pliers or scissors, screwdrivers and small tools in one pocket-sized handle. Some add a blade, a saw or an adjustable spanner.

What to look for: If the blade opens and locks with one hand, section 42a of the German Weapons Act allows carrying such a multitool in public only in a locked or sealed container or with a legitimate reason, according to the Berlin police for example when picking mushrooms or on a picnic. A model without a blade falls outside this rule. 1314

What we leave out on purpose

Four obvious gifts you will not find here, and why.

  • Slogan mugs and grandpa shirts. We show things your grandpa will put to use, not jokes about his age.

  • Wine and spirits. The German Federal Institute for Public Health advises older people to avoid alcohol entirely where possible, above all when they take medicines regularly. [17]

  • Smartwatch and tablet. A new device needing setup is little use on Christmas Eve. Give one only if you take time afterwards to show him how it works.

  • A trip together. A football match or a visit to a place from his past fits in no gift box, and what counts is going together. Best agree on a date right at the Christmas table.

Buying advice

Questions about a gift for grandpa

What do you give grandpa for Christmas?

Something for winter evenings or for outdoors, such as Bavarian spices, a photo book on space travel or wooden raclette boards. This guide shows nine ideas.

What do you give a grandpa who has everything?

Something you use together, such as wooden raclette boards when the family eats raclette at his place. Or something he uses up bit by bit, such as spices.

What is a small Christmas gift for grandpa?

Wooden raclette boards, a small keyring torch or a small set of barbecue spices. The current prices are shown with each idea.

When should you order?

Count back from Christmas Eve by the delivery time the shop states. You may withdraw from almost any online purchase within 14 days of receipt, not counting the delivery day, so a gift arriving on 11 December or later is still returnable after Christmas Eve. Sealed goods unsuitable for return for health or hygiene reasons are excluded once the seal is removed after delivery. 181920
